캐나다 밴쿠버에 사는 아담과 클레어는 얼마 전 아주 특별한 여정을 떠났습니다. 목적지는 온타리오주 와타 모호크 영토 깊은 곳에 있는 숲이었습니다.
아담의 아버지가 생전에 집을 짓기 위해 마련해 둔 땅이었지만, 십 대 시절 아버지를 여읜 후 오랫동안 사람의 발길이 닿지 않던 곳이었습니다.
아버지가 남긴 오래된 꿈을 이어받아 집을 짓겠다는 마음으로 찾아간 터전. 그런데 그곳에 도착하자마자 두 사람의 눈에 기묘한 풍경이 들어왔습니다.

◆ 나무 사이에서 마주친 거대한 눈동자
거대한 흰머리독수리 한 마리가 커다란 나무줄기 사이에 굳은 자세로 끼어 있었습니다.
공중에 붕 뜬 채 아무런 움직임도, 소리도 없었습니다. 처음에는 이미 숨을 거둔 게 아닐까 싶었지만, 아담이 한 걸음 다가서자 독수리의 커다란 눈동자가 그를 똑바로 향했습니다. 아주 미세하게 몸을 흠칫거리는 모습을 보고서야 녀석이 살아있다는 사실을 깨달았습니다.
“솔직히 정말 무서웠어요. 완전히 방심하고 있던 상태였거든요.”
아담은 당시를 이렇게 떠올렸습니다. 거대한 야생 조류의 크기에 압도당하면서도 일단 구해야 한다는 조바심이 동시에 밀려왔습니다.
두 사람은 주변에 떨어진 부러진 나뭇가지를 지렛대처럼 활용해 좁은 나무 틈 사이에 끼인 독수리의 몸을 살살 들어 올렸습니다.
놀란 독수리가 발톱이나 날개로 공격할 수도 있는 긴박한 상황이었지만, 신중하게 거리를 유지한 끝에 가까스로 구조해 냈습니다.

◆ 하늘의 제왕이 나무 틈에 갇힌 뜻밖의 이유
구조된 독수리는 오랜 시간 고립되어 부상을 입은 상태였습니다. 신고를 받고 도착한 자원봉사자들은 녀석을 안전하게 수송했고, 현재는 야생동물 보호 기관인 ‘셰이즈 오브 호프(Shades of Hope Wildlife Refuge)’에서 치료를 받고 있습니다.
회복까지는 짧게는 몇 주, 길게는 몇 달이 걸릴 예정입니다.
그런데 날렵한 사냥꾼인 독수리가 어쩌다 나무 틈에 끼이는 사고를 당했던 걸까요? 야생동물 보호 관계자인 앨리슨 테일러는 그 원인으로 ‘납 중독’을 지적했습니다.
야생 조류가 납 중독에 걸리면 시력이나 공간 감각, 인지 능력에 이상이 생깁니다.
비행할 때 주변 환경과의 거리감을 잘못 계산해 나무나 장애물에 그대로 부딪히거나 끼이는 사고를 당하게 되는 것입니다.

◆ “너는 지금 올바른 길을 가고 있다”
아버지의 그리움이 담긴 땅에서 마주한 이 구출극은 아담에게 깊은 인상을 남겼습니다. 하필 아버지를 기억하며 숲을 찾았던 그날, 그 시간에 독수리를 발견했다는 사실이 단순한偶然처럼 느껴지지 않았기 때문입니다.
아담은 당시 자신이 느꼈던 마음을 전했습니다.
“제게 그 메시지는 너무나 명확했습니다. ‘너는 지금 올바른 길을 가고 있다. 계속 나아가라. 이 땅을 돌보고, 아버지가 꿈꾸시던 비전을 이어가라’고 말해주는 것 같았습니다.”
치료를 마친 독수리는 완쾌되는 대로 그들이 처음 만났던 와타 모호크 숲으로 다시 방사될 예정입니다.
아담이 아버지의 꿈을 이어받아 집을 지어 올릴 터전 위로, 건강해진 독수리가 다시 날아오를 날을 기다려 봅니다.

My girlfriend, @whatclairedoin, and I were walking through Wahta Mohawk Territory toward the area where I plan to build a cabin when we found him wedged between three trees. He wasn’t moving or making a sound. The way he was suspended felt eerie, yet somehow beautiful. At first, we couldn’t tell whether he was alive. Then I noticed his eye looking directly at me. I stepped closer, and he flinched. He was alive. We came up with a plan and managed to free him. Four women from Wahta then came across the water by boat and helped get him to Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, where he is receiving professional care. When they arrived, one of the women looked at me and pointed out that I was wearing a hat with a bald eagle on it. Apparently, I had dressed for the rescue without even knowing it. 🦅 We still don’t know how he ended up there. It appeared that he had fallen straight down from above, possibly after an encounter with another eagle. My dad passed away when I was 14. He had a vision for this property, and now I’m finally trying to carry that vision forward by building a cabin on the land. For many Indigenous people, the eagle is sacred and understood as a messenger to the Creator. An eagle encounter can also be a sign that you’re walking the right path. We found him literally on the small path I had cut toward the future cabin site. Out of hundreds of acres, he was right there—on the path connected to my dad’s vision. To me, the message was unmistakable: You’re on the right path. Keep going. Care for this land. Carry my dad’s vision forward. If he makes a full recovery, he will be released back in the area where he was found. Thank you to the four women from Wahta and everyone at Aspen Valley caring for him.
