문제는 많은 사람들이 제습을 ‘조용한 냉방’ 정도로 오해하고 사용하는 데 있다. 특히 실내 온도가 이미 높은 상태에서 제습만으로 공간을 식히려고 할 경우, 냉방보다 더 오랜 시간 에어컨을 가동하게 되고, 이로 인해 누적 전력 소비량이 오히려 증가하는 상황이 벌어진다.

실내 온도가 28도 이상이면 냉방이 더 효율적이다

특히 사용자가 체감으로 시원함을 느끼지 못하고 리모컨으로 온도를 계속 낮출 경우, 제습 모드임에도 불구하고 실질적으로는 냉방 모드와 비슷한 수준의 전력을 소비하게 된다. 문제는 사용자 입장에서는 여전히 ‘제습 중’이라고 생각하므로, 전기요금이 왜 늘어났는지 알기 어렵다는 데 있다.
